To start with, proximity. Second, there’s a pretty good vibe to the place. Third, they have solid wings with pretty interesting flavors. If you need another reason, then you probably need to just click the next entry.
Anyway, we began with a couple of drinks — the Caribbean Iced Tea and their Imported Root Beer. Not a big fan of either. The root beer isn’t very different from the ones we have here for 4x the cost.
If you’re going for the iced tea, I’d rather go for the Sunrise Iced Tea. Cleaner flavors and much less expensive.
If you’re like me and you need a little bit of carbs, you’d probably get the Chili and Cheese Fries to share. Again, not a big fan especially when you have better ones over at Charlie’s. The chili needs a kick to it and they need to grind the beef better. Plus, the fries just aren’t as good.
I’d probably get the Poutine Fries instead. It’s one of their more popular dishes and although it’s not as good as I hoped it would be, I can see why. It’s fries, gravy, and cheese. They could be a little bit more original, but it wasn’t half bad.
But the story here is really about the wings.
First, they split the wings into 3 categories: Awesome (Filipino-flavored wings), Wipeout (US- and Canada-inspired flavors), and Cloud 9 (unique to Sunrise Buckets). Each is priced differently based on the weight of the wings. Second, they really try to pamper you up. They have bone collectors and even gloves so you can eat with your hands. I’d say not bad overall.
I got a Jack Daniel’s and the Sunrise Original for my first 2 sets. I’d probably pass on the Jack Daniel’s next time because there’s not much flavor to it — just a sweet hint at the end but not much else. The Sunrise Original was pretty good and you’d be safe to order more than a couple of them every single time.
My favorite would have to be the Honey Jalapeno. It’s amply spicy and has that jalapeno kick to it at the end. They coat their wings pretty well so the flavor really comes out in the chicken skin. The chicken is pretty moist but they have a tendency to over-fry the chicken or use old and frozen ones.
Overall, the side dishes are fine but they have a better and more unique selection of wings compared to other places. Their wings have a nice coating, properly fried, and not overly oily.
