Hermanos Taco Shop: A Little Assist from TV

I usually get stuck when deciding where to go.  ”Anywhere” seems to be the standard reply.  I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.  I found a pretty good way of going about this and it’s turning on the Travel Channel!  In my case, it was the Mexico episode of No Reservations and it was as good a time as any for some Mexican grub.

Hermanos Taco Shop is advertised as an authentic home-made Mexican joint.  I’ve never been to Mexico so I really can’t say what’s authentic Mexican.  But I do know a couple of things.

  1. Ristas is the closest to real Mexican taste according to my Mexican cousin-in-law and
  2. I’d rather go back to Orale for my Mexican fix.

Let’s get to the food.

The Carnitas Taco or oven-baked pork meat was crap.  The tacos came with a choice of roasted tomato salsa or pico de gallo (which were just OK), but the pork meat was even worse.  Dry and flavorless and I’m pretty sure the only saving grace was the BBQ-like sauce, which had a little spicy kick to it.  But not good enough to save the dish.

Carnitas Taco (P140.00 or $3.10)

The lengua tacos over at Orale were probably the best tacos we’ve had.  This was probably one of the worst… right after the ones by Pancake House.  The only good thing I can say is, it came in a soft shell1.

I seriously needed some heat and I didn’t think I’d ever say that in a Mexican joint.  Mexican food without the heat is like a massage with the happy ending.  OK, that came out wrong2  But yeah, just doesn’t work.  Even the Chili Con Carne Plate didn’t help.  Diced sirloin in red chili sauce and pinto beans served over Mexican rice topped with cheese and pico de gallo with a side of chips and salsa sound really nice.  I just wished it tasted as good as it sounds.  The rice was pretty dry and there aren’t a lot of things that I hate more than fucked up rice.

Chili Con Carne Plate (P275.00 or $6.10)

The chili itself wasn’t so good.  If a dish with “chili” and “carne” in its name didn’t any heat to it and only a chunkful of meat in it, what the hell do you call it then? I’d probably call it a sham.

The Chicken Quesadilla was pretty good, though. Flour tortilla stuffed with melted cheese, served with pico de gallo, and sour cream.  This was the only dish I was satisfied with.

Chicken Quesadillas (P230.00 or $5.10)

Overall, I thought the expectations were a bit high.  Thoroughly disappointed though by the fact that they used overnight ingredients and the fairly insanely high prices.  Considering the price I’m paying for a fucking burrito, I better be getting a damn good one.
